Expert eye — read before locking ski days
1–3 Oct is the tail of the NZ season. Coronet Peak reliably runs later into October; The Remarkables can wind up in the first week or two of the month. Before buying passes, confirm which mountains are spinning on your dates at nzski.com — and if in doubt, Coronet is the safer late-season bet. Daylight is generous (sunrise ≈ 6:50, sunset ≈ 19:35) but lifts stop at 16:00; plan hot pools and town for the afternoons.
02 The days
Timings road-tested against landing, branch hours and mountain reality.
DAY 1 · WED 30 SEP
Touchdown & the birthday boy
travel · celebration
10:05QF185 lifts off Brisbane. 3h across the ditch — movies and lunch sorted.
16:35Land Queenstown. Immigration + bags ≈ 20–25 min; GO Rentals counter is a one-minute walk from the terminal — follow the Rental Cars signs, pink branding.
17:00Collect the Outlander. Racks and chains fitted · hirer = cardholder · both licences shown · online check-in + chain form already done (see checklist).
17:20Frankton → townhouse, ~10 min via SH6A. Pak'nSave Frankton on the way for breakfast + lunch provisions — cheaper than town by a wide margin.
19:00Corby's 14th birthday dinner — his pick of town. Early booking recommended for a Wednesday; Fergburger afterwards is a Queenstown rite of passage.🎂 14 today
DAYS 2–4 · THU–SAT
Three days on the snow
ski · recover · repeat
07:15Gear up, boots on, out the door. Hire gear collected either first morning (shops open ~8am, 3 min off the mountain road — see §03) or the evening before if you'd rather sleep in.
08:00Drive the mountain. Coronet Peak ~20 min up Malaghans Rd; Remarkables ~35 min via SH6 — the switchback above Lake Wakatipu is half the fun.
09:00First lifts. Knees fresh, runs empty until ~10:30 when the shuttle crowds land. Mel's ACL — the call on snow days is hers; Coronet's groomers + café deck is the gentler mountain.
15:30Last runs, sun-softened. Off the hill by 16:00 when lifts close.
17:00Recovery: Onsen Hot Pools, Arthurs Point (~10 min from town). Private cedar tubs over the Shotover gorge — verified open, $180 a pool for two — evening sessions are 12+, so late slot for the grown-ups or a daylight soak for everyone (details §04). Alternates: Skyline luge / Arrowtown / lakefront ice-cream.
DAY 5 · SUN 4 OCT
The long way home
return · refuel
13:45Final pack-out, townhouse check. Fuel the Outlander in Frankton before the airport turn-off — the tank came full, it should go back full.
15:30Car back at GO Rentals, ZQN. Allow a relaxed 45 min for the return — racks off, chains in, paperwork quick because it was prepaid.
afterQF186 home to Brisbane. Dep time from the e-ticket — duty-free ops if the gate allows. Corby officially survives being 14 in two countries.
03 Ski hire — the halfway shops
You remembered right: the shop from last trip sits between the airport and town. Both top picks are in Frankton, on the airport side — 3 minutes off the mountain road.

RecommendationBooked & paid — NZ$730 · booking 3158126. 2× Premium Adult skis + boots + poles (boot size US 10) and 2× Premium Youth 7–17yrs (US 7), all four Lanhams, from Thu 1 Oct. Collected first morning on the way up the hill, or Wed 30th on the drive past if open after collection — confirm hours. BOA dials: the family standard after Europe. Skihire NZ's premium hire range runs buckle closure — the retail-floor request Blake lodged is noted below; confirm BOA availability at pickup and push the retail-rental upgrade if the hire fleet can't do it. Boots are re-fitted on the spot, so the boys' sizes are safe.
